Professor Anthony Campbell elected a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales

The Learned Society of Wales was established in May 2010 with the aim of demonstrating, celebrating and disseminating the excellence of Welsh research and scholarship, serve and provide advice to the nation, and to provide a link between academia, industry and commerce, and policy makers.

It was announced today that Professor Anthony Campbell had been made a Fellow of the Learned Society of Wales.

Professor Campbell's long and distinguished academic career has resulted in numerous awards, such as his 2011 Inspire Wales Award in Science & Technology and the Queen's Anniversary Prize, and his pioneering work on bioluminescence has generated £20m for the Welsh economy.

He is also a great advocate of the public understanding of Charles Darwin, founding the Darwin Centre for Biology and Medicine in 1993. The Centre is a leading focus for outreach and public engagement in Wales, organising over 150 events every year. 

Professor Campbell said: "I am delighted to have joined the illustrious company of the Fellows of the Learned Society of Wales. I hope that this will give me the opportunity to develop further scientific excellence and my passion for exciting young people about science through Cardiff University and the Darwin Centre I established in Pembrokeshire."

Head of the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Professor Gary Baxter congratulated Professor Campbell on behalf of the school, stating that this was "a well deserved recognition of your contributions over many years."
