Prestigious O'Donnell Lecture returns

The University is proud to continue its long-held tradition of hosting this Celtic-themed public lecture series.

The O’Donnell Lecture series has explored Celtic aspects of the archaeology and languages of Britain since 1954 at the longest-established universities of Wales.

The School welcomes Professor Nancy Edwards FBA [Bangor] for the O'Donnell Lecture 2017, Early Medieval Wales: Material Evidence and Identity.

Identity is a hotly contested topic in contemporary society and is equally a matter of debate amongst early medieval archaeologists. The period from the collapse of Roman rule to the coming of the Normans was formative in the evolution of Wales, its language and identity. Yet we know less about Wales c. AD350–1050 than any other part of Britain and Ireland.

This lecture will examine aspects of the archaeological evidence, for example early inscribed stones, metalwork and settlements, for what they can and cannot tell us about changing identities.

The O’Donnell Lecture takes place on 24 January in Wallace Lecture Theatre (Main Building, room 0.13) at 5.30pm. A wine reception precedes the talk in Council Chamber (room 1.22, Main Building).
