Cardiff Business School’s Executive MBA programme recently recognised its 2016 scholarship winners, when classes got underway for new and returning students this semester.

Each year the Executive MBA programme, a two year part-time programme designed for senior managers to accelerate their career and enhance their knowledge, offers two scholarships worth £4,000 each.

The Cardiff Business School Scholarship is offered to a manager from the private sector while the Professor Richard Whipp Scholarship rewards a manger in the public sector.

This year’s recipients were Jocelyn Parkes and Hannah Wilton respectively.

Hannah recently had the opportunity to meet with Professor Richard Whipp’s widow, Anne Whipp on a visit to the School. Professor Whipp had been a Professor of Human Resource Management at Cardiff Business School before becoming a Cardiff University Pro Vice-Chancellor. Mrs Whipp has maintained her relationship with the School and is considered a great friend and supporter by the Dean and wider faculty.

Talking about her situation, Hannah said: "I can't tell you how important receiving the scholarship was to me, as a self-funding new mother seeking to to support my career development while re-joining the workplace. This is often on of the toughest periods people face in their careers, especially financially. Receiving this support has given me an extra boost and one less thing to worry about which allows me to concentrate on my studies.

"I have worked in the NHS for 15 years as a principle clinical pharmacist and more recently an NHS manager focusing on patient flow. In an organisation like the NHS where everyone is there for the benefit of the patient there is so much that can be done to improve truly collaborative working and joining up care, improving efficiency and patient experience. I look forward to using what I've learned during the MBA to support the NHS in Wales in the future."

Jocelyn elaborated on why she had chosen the programme: “I chose the MBA to complement my first degree and to harness my experience gained over a career in management and business. The course is challenging but hugely informative and helpful. I am grateful for the scholarship award as it means I can enjoy my studies whilst continuing on my journey of self-development to the next step in my career.”

The Cardiff Business School Executive MBA programme is 28 months long and consists of 13 modules taught in three-day blocks by research active staff from across the faculty. As such, students benefit from up to the minute business thinking informed by the very latest research from academics working at the forefront of their disciplines. The programme is complemented by practitioner led sessions.

Class sizes are kept small enough to ensure students benefit from the time and attention of programme leaders but large enough to provide a dynamic and diverse cohort to learn with and from. If you are interested in the Executive MBA, please contact Ms Lowri Griffith for further information.
