Showcasing scientific excellence

Cardiff University today welcomes a delegation of 20 senior officials from leading academic institute and comprehensive research & development centre the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

The CAS delegation are visiting various locations across the UK to learn about the scope of scientific research and development in the public sector, how to develop talent and stimulate innovation and to visit the finest laboratory facilities. Cardiff University is the only Welsh destination within the CAS tour itinerary.

Cardiff University is recognised in independent government assessments as one of Britain's leading teaching and research universities and is a member of the Russell Group of the UK's most research intensive universities. The CAS delegation will be shown examples of Cardiff's research in action and how the university encourages innovation within this field.

The visitors will be officially welcomed by Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Elizabeth Treasure before Professor Hywel Thomas, Pro Vice-Chancellor, International & Engagement and Research, Innovation & Enterprise provides an informative briefing on Science, Innovation and Management of Research at the University.

Throughout the day, the delegation will experience tours of the state-of-the-art facilities within the School of Physics & Astronomy and the Cardiff Catalysis Institute, a renowned centre of excellence for catalytic research – the study of materials which speed up chemical reactions. There is also an opportunity for delegates to talk to current PhD science students. It is hoped that the visit will open up a productive and ongoing dialogue with members of the delegation.
