A group of cancer researchers at Cardiff University have completed a gruelling hike across the summits of the 10 highest peaks in the Lake District to raise money for Tenovus, Wales' leading cancer charity.

The team, named the Rambling Researchers and made up of professors, researchers and PhD students from Cardiff University, completed the 16-mile trek in 13 hours and 37 minutes, raising over £2,000 for the charity.

Bethan Palfrey, Challenge Event Fundraiser at Tenovus, said; "The standard of teams taking part this year was one of the highest we have ever seen.

"This is a tough challenge and they have done so well to complete it in such a great time and raise a brilliant amount. We continue to work closely with Cardiff University on different challenge events and they never fail to provide us with fantastic support."Dr. Kirsty Greenow, Rambling Researchers team leader and Research Associate at Cardiff University's School of Biosciences, said; "We wanted to do something special for Tenovus' 70th Birthday and we thought this challenge was perfect. It definitely wasn't easy, but our spirit and brilliant guides gave us the motivation to carry on.

"Our close links with Tenovus mean we see first hand the importance of funding cancer research in Wales, allowing us to ultimately understand how cancers can be treated more effectively, helping to improve the lives of cancer patients.

"After such a good experience on the Tenovus 10 Peaks, we're hoping to make our fundraising for Tenovus an annual event."Cardiff University's Meera Raja, member of the team and currently studying targeted therapies of bowel cancer funded by Tenovus for her PhD, said; "It was a very challenging experience but one that was definitely worth it. When we first began training, it hit me that it was going to be tough, but I'm really glad I did it.

"I wanted to do something to support Tenovus who have supported me through my PhD, so it seemed the perfect opportunity to give something back."

Tenovus have a whole host of events to get involved with during their 70th Birthday year. From abseil days to marathons, there is something for everyone. To find a fundraising event for you visit www.tenovus.org.uk or call 029 2076 8850.
