Two community champions; Ali Abdi and Moseem Suleman have jointly received the Joan Gallagher award this year for outstanding work in the Grangetown community
Community Gateway's Partnerships and Facilities Manager Ali Abdi was recognised for both his community work and his contribution to the Cardiff Somali community. Ali has worked tirelessly and demonstrated unshakable commitment to getting Somaliland recognised by Cardiff Council as a state, the award he received acknowledged his efforts and commended him. Ali said:
"I am humbled and honored to have received this award at the launch of what is becoming one of our most exciting projects; the Grange Pavilion. Many thanks to everyone at Grangetown Community Action for nominating me."
Moseem Suleman, owner of Ice-Cream Passion on Clare Road, is a local businessman who has been heavily involved with community projects for over a year. He has championed projects such as the Cardiff University Grangetown Philosophy café and is also one of the organisers of Radio Ramadan. It is also now hoped that Moseem will help to run the community pop up café planned for the new Grange Pavilion.
The award is presented annually in memory of Joan Gallagher, the long serving secertary of Grangetown Community Concern, the forerunner to Grangetown Community Action. Last year’s winner was Dave King, the driving force behind Keep Grangetown Tidy.
The awards were presented at the Grangetown Festival by Grangetown Community Action chairman Chris Lomax, with local AM Vaughan Gething.
