The Bioinformatics MSc programme based within the School of Medicine is amongst the businesses and individuals shortlisted in the 2022 Wales STEM Awards.

The face-to-face postgraduate programme is amongst 34 innovative companies to be named finalists across the awards, which celebrate those making a difference to, and championing, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths (STEM) in Wales.

Following the success of the inaugural awards in 2020, the Wales STEM Awards aims to shine a spotlight on the organisations and individuals making a difference to the STEM agenda in Wales.

The Bioinformatics MSc programme was shortlisted in the STEM Educational Programme of the Year (Public Sector) category, alongside other notable programmes that aim to address the STEM diversity gap, the skills shortage or seek to inspire and raise the aspirations of the next generation.

All finalists across the 12 categories will now be considered by an industry-leading panel of judges, with the winners being announced at the awards ceremony at the Mercure Cardiff Holland House Hotel on 27th October 2022.

Bioinformatics Programme Director Dr Richard Anney said: “It’s an honour to see our MSc Bioinformatics programmes listed as finalists alongside such great projects and institutions in Wales. We have a fantastic opportunity to showcase how we develop transferable skills in biology, computing and maths, to be able to have a real and positive impact on human health. To be finalists for our education provision in STEM really demonstrates to us how important it is to inspire learners, team workers and our future leaders. We are really grateful to everyone who contributes to our programmes to make them the success they are today.”

Co-founder of the awards Liz Brookes, said: “We are delighted to announce the shortlist for the 2022 Wales STEM Awards. With the success of the inaugural awards really highlighting the amazing work of the most progressive organisations and individuals at the forefront of STEM innovation in Wales, we’re looking forward to recognising and celebrating those that have done some impressive stuff over the course of this year too!

“We’d like to congratulate all those shortlisted and look forward to seeing them all at the awards evening in October.”

Dr Louise Bright, head of judges and founder of Wales Women in STEM Network, said: “The Wales STEM Awards do such an important job recognising and celebrating the achievements of organisations and individuals working in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths in Wales. This year, just like the first Wales STEM Awards, I’ve been privileged to read about the inspiring work happening around the country. I am looking forward to meeting the nominees and learning more about them and unlike our inaugural year, celebrating their success in person at the awards ceremony in October.”

The full list of nominees can be found on the Wales STEM Awards website.
