Welsh Varsity win 2016

Cardiff University Sport clubs proved again that they are the dominant force in the annual Welsh Varsity contest with Swansea University.

37 fixtures took place between the two universities with Cardiff teams coming out on top with 25 victories to 12, securing a record number of victories in the Varsity shield. This follows a great BUCS campaign by our teams which currently has us placed 10th in the national rankings and by far the highest place Welsh University.

The Varsity shield is in its 14th year and it has never been lost by Cardiff University who have come out on top since 2003.

Some notable results were in the Ladies rugby as the Cardiff team turned around a 15-5 half time deficit to win 18-19. The ladies team were beaten twice in the league campaign this year and is a mark of the improvement shown by the girls.

Also in rugby the men’s fresher’s defeated the Swansea fresher’s team for the first time in many years to spark great celebrations from the many fans watching from the side lines.

Basketball and Lacrosse won the double with the ladies and men’s teams both winning convincingly. As did Hockey men’s and women’s with the men taking the result winning on flicks!

Not a great afternoon for football with the mens, ladies and IMG teams falling just short in highly contested fixtures.

All results for the day can be found at http://www.welshvarsity.com/varsity-shield/

A great day for Cardiff University and all of it players and supporters. We definitely turned Swansea red!
