CITER's Primary and Secondary Schools outreach programme for the 2019/2020 academic year began in January. Between January and March we visited Christ the King R C Primary School, Cardiff and invited three Primary Schools across the Cardiff areas to the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences to take part in our popular "blood, bones and gory bits" engagement workshop. In turn we reached out to one hundred and fifty primary school aged children.

We invited Tonysguboriau Primary School, Pontyclun for the morning session and Roath Park Primary School for the afternoon session. The "blood, bones and gory bits" engagement workshop includes three hands on activities including blood and cells, bones and organs and maggot racing. The blood and cells activity promotes an understanding of blood component, function and immunity, the bones and organs activity promotes an understanding of human anatomy, organs and organs function whilst the maggot racing activity promotes the concept of wound healing; where medical maggots originate from, life cycle of the fly and the properties of maggots in helping heal wounds.
