Meaghan Morris appointed Honorary Visiting Professor
25 January 2018
Meaghan Morris, currently Professor of Gender and Cultural Studies at the University of Sydney, has been made an Honorary Visiting Professor of the School of Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies (JOMEC).
Professor Morris is a figure of world stature in the field of Cultural Studies and her key publications are acknowledged as classics in the fields of media, gender and cultural studies internationally.
She was Chair of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society (2012-2016) and of the international Association for Cultural Studies (ACS), 2004-08.
Formerly Chair Professor of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University, Hong Kong, Professor Morris established the first Cultural Studies degree in the Chinese world.
In recognition of her work, Professor Morris received the inaugural Association of Cultural Studies ‘Stuart Hall Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cultural Studies’, in 2016.
Her current connections with the School relate to her long running research into the transnational circulation of Hong Kong martial arts cinema. This interest brought her to the School's first ever Martial Arts Studies Conference in 2015.
Since 2010, Professor Morris has regularly collaborated with Professor Paul Bowman in promoting the field of ‘Martial Arts Studies’. As well as giving keynotes at Professor Bowman’s annual Martial Arts Studies Conferences, Professor Morris sits on the boards of the Martial Arts Studies book series, the Martial Arts Studies journal and the Martial Arts Studies Research Network.
Professor Bowman said, "It is wonderful to formally acknowledge Professor Morris’s valuable and stimulating relationship with JOMEC. Having her visit us regularly will be enormously enriching for the research culture of the School".
Professor Morris’s first visit since receiving her new title will be to attend the next Martial Arts Studies Conference, which is entitled ‘Bruce Lee’s Cultural Legacies’, and takes place on 11-12 July 2018.
Professor Morris said, "I am very happy to have this connection with Cardiff University. I look forward to meeting new colleagues and old friends when I come for the Bruce Lee conference in July".
