Student experience

Through all our activities we aim to give our students the best possible experience by ensuring that learning Chinese is fun, memorable and, most of all, useful.

Here are just some of the comments and feedback we've received from our students.

Chinese Beginners I

Keith Miller found that the Confucius Institute’s Chinese Beginners I course significantly helped improve his Chinese proficiency, particularly his pronunciation.

"The tutor was very good at directing her time towards the students who needed extra tuition, so that everyone on the course was at the same broad level of proficiency."

Chinese Beginners II

International journalism lecturer James Stewart began learning Chinese in order to improve his Chinese pronunciation. He has now progressed to Chinese Beginners II.

"I hope the courses will enable me to communicate with Chinese people in their own language - especially if I visit China in the future."

Advanced Chinese I

Nikolai Llewellyn began Mandarin lessons with the Confucius Institute in 2009. He has now developed into a confident conversational and professional speaker of Mandarin.

"The enthusiasm and understanding of the Institute's teachers have allowed me reach a standard where I now feel confident using Mandarin in business settings. I am very excited about what the future holds."

Cardiff Confucius Institute China Trip

Each year Cardiff Confucius Institute organises a trip to China for students on part time Chinese courses for adults or Languages for All Chinese programmes. The trip is an opportunity to travel to at least two cities in China, to learn and practice the language first-hand, and to experience life on a University campus.

In April 2019, a group of 15 students took part in the Confucius Institute China Trip. They spent ten days living on the Xiamen University Campus, learning Chinese and experiencing life as a student in China.

Following their time in Xiamen, they visited Shanghai for three days during which they undertook sight-seeing activities and put into practice their newly acquired Chinese vocabulary. Watch the video of their trip here
