Etienne de Durand

Etienne de Durand is an analyst of strategic and military affairs and a senior research fellow at the French Institute of International Relations. Since 2006, he has been the director of the French Institute of International Relations's Security Studies Center. He is also Assistant Professor at the Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Paris (Sciences Po). He has taught international relations and security studies at the Université Jean Moulin – Lyon III, the Ecole Militaire Spéciale de Saint-Cyr Coëtquidan and the Collège Interarmées de Défense.

He regularly contributes analyses for the French Ministries of Defense and Foreign Affairs. He was part of the group of civilian advisers for General McChrystal's Afghanistan review in July 2009, and has been involved in the 2013 Defense White Paper in France.

At the French Institute of International Relations, Etienne de Durand follows more specifically French and US defense policy; European security and transatlantic issues; nuclear deterrence and proliferation; and current military issues such as ongoing interventions and military transformation. He has authored numerous monographs and articles on these issues. He is also the editor of the Proliferation Papers and of the Focus stratégique electronic series.
