Dr Sergio Catignani

Sergio Catignani is Senior Lecturer in Security and Strategic Studies at the Strategy and Security Institute, University of Exeter. Prior to joining the SSI, Dr Catignani was a Lecturer in Strategic and Security Studies in the Department of International Relations, University of Sussex, Assistant Professor in International Security in the Political Institute, Leiden University, Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute Florence, and Lecturer in War Studies in the Department of War Studies, King's College London. In 2010 and 2011 he was a Leverhulme Research Fellow and conducted an empirical study on the British Army's adaptation to the insurgency campaign in Helmand Province, Afghanistan. Although funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the study was sponsored by then Land Warfare Director General, Lt. Gen. Nick Carter.

Dr Catignani has carried out advisory work with several NATO armies on counterinsurgency and on the future character of conflict. His research and teaching interests comprise, amongst other things, civil-military relations, military innovation and transformation, contemporary security issues (especially counter-insurgency, counter-terrorism, stabilization operations and military humanitarian intervention), Israeli security, British and US military and security strategy and operations, and foreign, defence and security policy of individual states or in a comparative context.

Dr Catignani has recently been awarded a three-year British Army-Economic and Social Research Council grant for the project titled, Sustaining Future Reserves 2020: Assessing Organisational Commitment in the Reserves, in order to examine the key factors influencing reservists' organisational commitment to the British Army.
