Unleashing the power of AI-powered chattable avatars in interactive exhibitions

In collaboration with the Bath Assembly Rooms (National Trust), this project aims to revolutionise visitor experiences with cultural heritage by developing AI-powered chattable avatars that create immersive experiences in interactive exhibitions.

Leveraging cutting-edge AI technologies, these avatars will transform traditional static displays of cultural heritage into interactive encounters, offering new dimensions of learning, storytelling and engagement.

The first phase of the project involves a detailed technical review of current avatar development tools and methods. This includes assessing the latest technologies in animation, voice synthesis and AI-driven interaction to understand what is possible in creating responsive and lifelike avatars.

The second phase centres around a co-production workshop in collaboration with BAR. In this creative and participatory setting, Cardiff University and BAR worked together to design the personalities and visual aesthetics of the avatars. Equally important is the consideration of ethical questions surrounding digital identity, consent, representation, and the broader social implications of using avatars in everyday life.

This project will culminate in a development framework that can inform future work in the field. It will also produce a collection of co-created avatars that reflect diverse  perspectives and values.
