Beyond Policing: Exploring alternatives for Wales

This project combines public criminology with arts-based engagement to look at questions around race, policing and alternatives to enforcement-oriented policing and punitive justice in Wales.

Wales is not immune from the issues of racialised criminal justice that concern Black Lives Matter. Research by the university has highlighted racial bias in the criminal justice system in Wales, and significant racial disparities of imprisonment rates, sentence length and stop & search.

People from ethnic minority communities are also more likely to experience criminal victimisation. Long-standing patterns of racial disparity in experiences of police enforcement appear to have been exacerbated further in the policing of COVID-19 regulations.

The project will curate a symposium and a series of workshops bringing together activists, academics, artists, and members of affected communities to explore these injustices and generate solutions.
