Sustainable travel
We encourage our staff and students, as well as visitors travelling to the University, to use sustainable modes of transport.
Our Travel Plan highlights the key areas we can work together to reduce our carbon impact, contribute to long-term well-being and support Wales in securing a low-carbon future. Below, you can find out more about our work to support sustainable and active travel.
If you are a member of staff or a student, you can also get more information on our intranet.
Walking
Cardiff is a great city to explore on foot with a good network of pedestrian routes that allow you to discover its striking and historic landmarks.
Staff and students can get rewards for their walking active travel journeys to campus by signing up to Changing Steps Cardiff – more information can be found below.
Cycling
There is a good network of cycle routes between campus buildings and a rapidly increasing network of local cycle lanes, which makes travel safer and more enjoyable.
There are over 3,800 bicycle parking spaces across campus for staff and students, including secure bike shelters, and we offer discounted cycle locks and bike security registration. We also offer cycle maintenance via Dr Bike, and shower and changing facilities to make the transition from cycling to work more convenient.
Buses and trains
Cardiff is well connected by both local and national bus and train providers. You can find out more via our visitor information pages.
Cars
Of course, we appreciate that at times, it is not possible to travel by an alternative method.
However, we do offer a range of options to help reduce the impact of cars in our city, including a lift share scheme and signposts to vehicle hire and Park and Ride options.
We are also working to increase the number of electric vehicle charging points around the university to help reduce carbon emissions caused by cars.
Changing Steps Cardiff
Changing Steps Cardiff is a rewards scheme designed to encourage active and sustainable travel. Using the BetterPoints app, university staff and students can collect points for travelling in more sustainable ways. Points can be spent on offers and vouchers or can be donated to support biodiversity projects across campus.
Where points are donated to our biodiversity projects, 100% of the money raised will be allocated to projects by the Ecosystem Resilience and Biodiversity Action Plan (ERBAP) Steering Group, to help progress their plan for building ecosystem resilience and biodiversity across Cardiff University’s campuses.
