Cardiff Learning and Teaching Academy
Cardiff Learning and Teaching Academy brings together experts in learning and teaching to support staff in delivering an engaging and inclusive experience for all students.
We offer continuous professional development opportunities for staff at all stages of their careers in Higher Education, ranging from the AdvanceHE accredited fellowship programmes, to stand-alone events and bespoke workshops. Our specialist teams work in partnership with School-based staff to enhance the student experience by providing support, advice and sector knowledge.
Education Development Toolkit
We have developed the Education Development Toolkit to guide the development of outstanding educational practices and consistently high-quality student learning experiences that support all students to fulfil their potential.
The toolkit is full of practical tips, examples of effective practice, advice, tools and models, covering a wide range of learning, teaching and curriculum-related themes, including inclusivity, sustainability and employability.
Learning and Teaching CPD Programme
Our Learning and Teaching CPD Programme sessions are led by staff with broad pedagogical expertise and are practice-focused and enhancement-led. All courses and workshops relate to a theme or key learning and teaching principle from the Education Development Toolkit and are mapped to the Professional Standards Framework (PSF), and complement our Advance HE-accredited Education Fellowships Programme, which supports you to gain recognition for your professional practice.
We also provide bespoke CPD at a College, School and Programme level (e.g. on programme and module design, inclusive education, personal tutoring), and a range of role-based CPD programmes, including a development programme for new Directors of Learning and Teaching and a ‘develop the developer’ workshop for Assessment and Feedback Leads.
Education Development
We provide support across a range of education development activities, including programme development and re-validation. We provide specialist input and consultancy throughout the process, from the scoping phase right through to delivery and enhancement. We also offer advice, guidance and professional learning and development opportunities across a range of curriculum-related themes and priorities, such as inclusive education, education for sustainable development and assessment and feedback.

The programmes are designed to be engaging, light-touch and practice-focused and have been co-developed by a wide range of staff and students to meet the needs of participants and the university.
Quality and Academic Standards
Our Quality and Academic Standards team support the staff and student community with guidance on how to develop, approve, and monitor programmes, modules, and other credit-bearing provision in line with the University’s expectations. This includes advice on:
- approving and managing programmes
- making routine changes to programmes
- developing programmes with taught education partnerships
- developing progression and articulation agreements
- discontinuing a programme
Digital education
We lead and support a range of digital education practices, projects and initiatives to enhance teaching and improve the student experience. We provide flexible and responsive day-to-day training and support for digital education tools, platforms, and best practices for colleagues across the University.
We work in partnership with schools and departments to appropriately embed digital education practice into teaching, learning and assessment. Our school partners help to address school priorities and coordinate digital education activities and projects, ensuring blended and online provision is appropriately designed, resourced and supported.
Our Media Production Service produces high-quality, education-focused video content. This service also provides advice, guidance, and support on all aspects of media production and manages our self-service Panopto recording studios.
We also have expertise in designing, developing and deploying immersive learning experiences for a range of learning and teaching activities. This could help your teaching practice, making use of current content or producing bespoke content as required.
Student Voice and Partnership
Student engagement is more than just surveys – it means an ongoing, two-way dialogue between staff and students, allowing you to work in partnership to drive continuous improvements to our learning experience. Student engagement is more important than ever in a blended learning context. Some of our projects and support include:
- Student Engagement resources to help staff engage with students, including email templates, presentation slides, and guidance on when to engage your students.
- The Student Experience Partners scheme is a small group of current students who work in partnership with staff across the University on a variety of tasks and projects throughout the academic year, offering student insight to help develop, shape, and improve the student experience at the University
- Managing all institutional and national surveys for the University. We provide support with the administration and promotion of surveys, approving survey requests, and accessing student feedback data.
- Working collaboratively with Cardiff University Students’ Union to continually enhance student partnership. The themes for our projects are raised via the Student View, a report created each year by the Students’ Union to highlight key student priorities and areas for enhancement.
- The University's flagship On-campus Internships student placement schemes provide opportunities to students each summer to work alongside our learning and teaching staff on research and projects.
Learning Design Service
Our Learning Design Service supports colleagues with the design and re-design of programmes, modules, and learning and assessment activities.
Our multidisciplinary teams work in partnership with staff in schools, providing practical support and guidance to design inclusive, engaging and pedagogically sound learning experiences, including appropriate use of digital technologies. We support continuous improvement based on student and staff feedback, horizon scanning and evolving practices.
