Improvement Scientist Fellowship Awarded

10 May 2011

Professor Davina Allen of the School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies has been awarded an Improvement Scientist Fellowship by the Health Foundation.

The fellowships will provide three-year funding to develop original, applied research that will make a real difference to improving the quality of healthcare in the UK.

Improvement science is a developing academic field dedicated to building a knowledge base for improving health services, and translating this knowledge into healthcare practice to deliver the best possible patient care. The Health Foundation believes that a more systematic and scientifically rigorous approach is needed in this research area to close the gap between current and best practice in healthcare. The new programme aims to make a major contribution to the development of improvement science.

The Improvement Science Fellowships provide three years’ funding to undertake the research and also include fully funded leadership development and access to the new Health Foundation Improvement Science Network.

There were 74 applicants for the awards, 12 made it to the shortlist and the final 4 were awarded following a 3 day assessment centre process and panel interview.

Professor Allen said: "I am extremely pleased to receive this award particularly as it is directly centred on my own research interests."
