This module will focus on enabling you as students to reflect on your current practice and to develop your expertise in consultation, assessment, diagnostic reasoning and decision making within their field of practice.

This module is aimed at professionals who work at all levels and has been designed to advance knowledge and understanding. As health care professionals you are increasingly taking on more advanced roles within many areas of healthcare in order to enhance service delivery and improve the patient experience.

A  number of key skills have been identified which include making professionally autonomous decisions, assessing needs using highly developed knowledge and skills and using decision making and problem solving skills. This module will focus on developing and advancing your skills in these areas.

This module will utilise lectures, small group work, tutorials, simulations and practice in clinical settings in order to develop your knowledge and skills in assessment and decision making within your client group. Shared learning is a central theme and you will benefit from studying alongside others from a variety of settings.

Case study

You will be expected to produce a 4000 word reflective assignment, based on a case study approach which will summatively assess your clinical and theoretical knowledge and its application to decision making.

You will be expected to complete an objective structured clinical assessment (OSCA) based on a simulated consultation with a patient.  You will complete a consultation with a patient in a simulated environmental and this will be summatively assessed by two examiners using a structured proforma.
