Preparation For Practice:

Complex practice on their educational degree. 2nd and 3rd year students.

3rd year students- Students are unable to do their management within this area for the following reasons: Qualified staff are expected to have four years of ICU before being allowed to enter a management in-house programme.  The purpose of the management programme is to allow qualified staff to lead a zone. On ICU, there are three zone areas. These three zones are widespread and each zone has a zone leader. The unit has 32 beds; therefore is vast.  The environment is not conducive for a student nurse to make clinical decisions.

Yes, the ICU accepts newly qualified nurses; however, once employed by the ICU, enter a six months in-house induction programme to be exposed to specialist skills.
