Remit:

A 16 bedded unit, providing 8 intensive care beds (level 3) and 8 high dependency beds (level 2) on 2 purpose built units adjacent to each other. Patients are admitted from a variety of settings, including medical, surgical and trauma, who require continuous invasive monitoring of vital signs and often multi-organ support. Multi-organ support encompassing artificial mechanical ventilation, cardiovascular support and renal replacement therapy are provided for patients.

Key Learning Opportunities:

- Close continuous monitoring of all vital signs via central venous and arterial lines
- Respiratory monitoring via oxygen saturations and arterial/venous blood gas analysis
- Inotropic & cardiovascular drug support
- Invasive & non-invasive ventilation
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy / Haemofiltration
- Cardiac output monitoring (PiCCO)
- Sepsis treatment through the use of care bundles including Xigris
- Whilst we do not provide specialist services such as neurological surgery, patients such as these are often admitted to the unit for stabilisation prior to transfer to an appropriate specialist centre. You may therefore get the opportunity to go with these patients on transfer.
