Main Roles and Responsibilities

Associate Lecturer role

As an associate lecturer my role includes the undertaking of learning, teaching, scholarly and research activities at Cardiff University School of Nursing and Midwifery Studies (SONMS). Having commenced in August 2010 I am developing an understanding of how the SONMS operates. I am aligned to modules 5 and 6 participating in planning, implementing and evaluating clinical programmes related to nursing education. I have been taking part through involvement/attendance in a range of School activities including classroom teaching, personal tutor support, curriculum development, examination boards, programme management groups, whole School away day and School Board. Having only been on secondment a few months I will expand my role involvement to ensure maximisation of outcomes from the secondment over the forthcoming 21 months, making the most of this wonderful opportunity.

Clinical Role Substantive Post

My substantive role is as the Education & Development Lead nurse within the Education & Development department with responsibility for the wider continuing professional development of nurses at all levels (registered & unregistered) within Velindre Cancer Centre. The Education & Development Lead Nurse role involves advancing and enhancing the role of qualified nurses and HCSW’s within Velindre cancer centre.  I assume primary responsibility for the development, implementation and evaluation of induction, education and skills training programs for staff within the Velindre Cancer Centre Nursing team, whilst supporting clinical practice development throughout the hospital, and across professional groups as required. I am also the co-ordinator and link facilitator for all nursing students on placement within Velindre Cancer Centre.

I lead on the implementation of the Trust nursing education and development strategy and, through close partnership with the Professional Lead Nurse and Ward Managers, lead clinical practice, staff education and professional development whilst supporting change, innovation and new ways of working.

I work closely with the Cardiff and Vale UHB nurse education department on the Health Care Support Worker training programmes, mentorship courses as well as on the RCN leadership programme (2 days a month).

Career Overview

Since registering as a nurse in 1994 my experiences have been primarily around cancer and palliative care where I have worked as a nurse at many levels in a range of care settings.

I have developed a love of education since having an opportunity to coordinate a project across South East Wales where improving end of life care in the care home sector through education was the focus and achieved.

As an Education & Development Lead Nurse I strive to ensure the philosophy of excellence underpinning Velindre Cancer Centre and the wider Education & Development function is valued and adhered to and that high standards of service and care are monitored, delivered and maintained.

I thrive on challenges and am continuously setting myself new goals.

Working as an associate lecturer is providing me with a whole host of new development opportunities, which I will endeavour to make the most of.

I am currently in the dissertation phase of MSc in Education and also doing a coaching level 7 programme. My career is driven by improving patient care and driving standards forward.

Academic interests

Currently undertaking dissertation for MSc in Education. Am very interested in the development of the nursing workforce at all levels.

Research activity / interests

Interested in all aspects of research related to supporting people living with cancer, palliative care and nursing workforce review & development.
