Neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis and treatment –thoracic and cervical spine

The aim of this course is to enable students to develop a problem-solving approach to neuromusculoskeletal diagnosis. It allows students to develop knowledge about differential diagnosis of neuromusculoskeletal disorders of the thoracic and cervical cervical spine and to look critically at approaches to treatment and management. This knowledge will be used in the critical evaluation of assessment, treatment and management strategies in neuromusculoskeletal physiotherapy, therefore enabling students to critically evaluate clinical practice on the basis of current evidence.
Students will also acquire skills in the assessment and treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal thoracic and cervical spine conditions.

Tutor Biography:

Valerie Sparkes is a lecturer at the Physiotherapy Department, Cardiff University with a special interest in spinal pain. She is an experienced researcher in this field.
Emma Sargeant is a lecturer at the Physiotherapy Department , Cardiff University and works clinically in Cardiff and Vale UHB

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the course a student will be able to demonstrate understanding of:
1. The structure and function of the thoracic and cervical spine
2. The use of clinical reasoning skills as part of a problem-solving approach to assess patients with thoracic and cervical  spine dysfunction and identify the presenting problems and their underlying causes in relation to anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, pathophysiology and psychology
3. Demonstrate advanced clinical reasoning skills, as part of the problem-solving process, when determining approaches to treatment and management of patients with thoracic and cervical spine dysfunction and pathologies
4. Demonstrate skills in a variety of assessment techniques and treatment interventions for the management of thoracic and cervical spine dysfunction and pathologies

Additional information:

This course has practical elements and you must be prepared to work practically and act as a model for other course members. Suitable clothing to allow adequate exposure of the region is required. Participants will be of mixed gender.
