Electronic and Communications Engineering (BEng/MEng)

The Degree Programme
With the teaching of Electronics firmly embedded in the field of communications technology, students studying Electronics and Communications Engineering will have a unique opportunity to engage with industry in this important and fast changing sector. With full accreditation from the IET, the scheme allows for a fast-track route to Chartered Engineer status.
Strong Industrial Links and Excellence in Research
Being a research led school, students will experience at first hand the latest in practical laboratory skills that are of direct relevance employers in the electronics and communications sector. Teaching is based on high quality research which was awarded a 5A grading in the last Research Assessment Exercise. Coupled with the practical hands on teaching is the provision of Agilent Technologies Advanced Design System which is a powerful electronic design automation software system. This industry standard application offers a complete design integration package to designers of electronic products such as mobile communications systems, wireless networks, and radar and satellite communications systems. Use of this package is fully integrated into the teaching of modules at all levels from the first year onwards. In the third and fourth years of study, students will be encouraged to engage with industrially led research projects that not only provide relevant and up to date experience, but lead to opportunities for establishing a relationship with industrial organisations that can lead to employment following graduation.
State-of-the-Art Facilities
Our teaching laboratories have benefited greatly from the generosity of the following companies; all of whom have made significant investment in the provision of state of the art equipment and software. Also in the last year, the school has invested over £150,000 in the refurbishment of the laboratories, thus providing a unique teaching environment and experience that is unparalleled in the UK. Agilent Technologies, National Instruments, Texas Instruments, Rohde and Schwartz are just some of the industries working with staff in the Electronics and Communications field.
