Civil and Environmental Engineering (BEng/MEng)

A mobile drilling rig in a dusty environment

Traditionally, Civil Engineering has been involved in the design, construction and maintenance of items such as roads, bridges, coastal defences, sports stadia and so on. Environmental Engineering, on the other hand, has been concerned with improving technologies, which support and enhance the quality of life for people throughout the world. In a world that is becoming more environmentally sensitive and aware, especially in how we use its resources, the combination of Civil and Environmental Engineering offers the perfect approach for people who want to shape the way in which we live. This course is implemented by supplying solutions to problems such as remediation and reclamation of spoiled land and ensuring clean water supplies, as illustrated in the photograph where engineers are drilling boreholes to evaluate groundwater contamination. If you feel that you want to contribute to the way in which tomorrow's sustainable environment is built, then this could be the degree scheme for you.

Both MEng and BEng courses are offered as a straight course or in combination with a year in Industry. The MEng is also available with the option of a Year in Europe. The MEng is an enhanced degree and has become the preferred route to gaining professional status as a Chartered Engineer. MEng students benefit from advanced learning in subjects such as design and management as well as a greater breadth of understanding of related engineering subjects.  The BEng courses are available for those who prefer this route and since it has been established for many years, it is highly regarded by employers.

Employment

Students participating in a field study

Graduates from this degree scheme have no difficulty in obtaining relevant employment. There is good demand for young engineers with environmental specialisms. Consultancy firms account for most of the job opportunities, followed by Government Organisations including Local Authorities and the Environment Agency. Others have chosen to work for national and multinational companies: recent examples include companies in the electronics, pharmaceutical and aeronautic fields. Health and Safety management is a growing career path for our graduates. Due to current global environmental legislation changes, waste management has become a major employment option. You will also be attractive to a wide range of employers who are looking for graduates with good analytical, computing and management skills.
