Oral Health

Childhood epidemiology programme

The Welsh Oral Health Information Unit (WOHIU) is part of the Dental Public Health team within Cardiff University School of Dentistry.  Working with the Wales Dental Epidemiology Co-ordinator the unit plans and delivers the NHS Dental Survey Programme for Wales. The unit provides independent professional advice, quality assurance, data cleaning, data verification, data analysis and a reporting service on behalf of the Welsh Government commissioned via Public Health Wales.  The WOHIU and the Wales Dental Epidemiology Co-ordinator work with the Community Dental Services and the Welsh Government (through the Office of the Chief Dental Officer and the Health Statistics and Analysis Unit in the Statistics Directorate) to deliver the surveys.  This integrated team approach has ensured that the highest quality assurance standards have been achieved within the childhood epidemiology programme.

Wales Care Home Dental Survey

The 2010-11 survey of care home residents in Wales follows on from the 2006-07 survey of care home managers by examining a sample of residents to obtain data on prevalence of dental diseases, the types of interventions they could benefit from and the difficulties in delivering the dental care required.  It was designed to be a supplementary survey to the national Adult Dental Health Survey (ADHS) 2009 and wherever possible used the same methodological criteria.  This report is intended to support local health boards in Wales to use information from the survey to plan dental service provision.
