This programme offers a truly unique modular scheme, designed to provide students from a professional dental background with an extensive understanding of the science and practice of implantology; from theoretical science through restorative treatment planning to clinical practice in the direct management of patients requiring fixed and removable implant-retained prostheses.
The aim of the course is to afford individuals the opportunity to explore and analyse, in an interdisciplinary environment, existing and developing theories/concepts that underpin the field of implantology. The course will facilitate professional and personal growth through a wide range of educational and direct clinical experiences, designed to be the most suitable combination of skills for the practice of dental implantology.
The School of Dentistry is uniquely placed to develop an implantology teaching programme because of its multidisciplinary expertise with successful research linked to a thriving postgraduate educational implant training programme.
Title and Qualification
A Master of Science award in Implantology (minimum 180 credits) with the inclusion of exit points providing for a
- Postgraduate Diploma in Restorative and Implant Dental Practice (minimum of 120 credits).
- Postgraduate Certificate in Restorative Dental Practice (minimum of 60 credits).
The above awards have been formulated in accordance with Senate regulations for Modular Postgraduate Programmes of Study at Cardiff University.
This is a modular programme consisting of four, taught core modules (Part 1) and a dissertation (Part 2). In Part 1, each module is credit-rated at 30 M-level credits. The modules are Research Methodologies; Cellular and Molecular Biology; Restorative Dentistry and Implantology, delivered concurrently over a 26-week period. Following satisfactory completion of the assessed course work and examinations in Part 1, students will go on to Part 2 of the course, the dissertation. Students will be required to complete and submit a clinically- or laboratory-based research project (60 credits) to obtain a Master’s degree in Implantology.
To be eligible for the award of the Postgraduate Certificate in Restorative Dental Practice, students must have completed Modules One and Three of the course which will give them the knowledge, intellectual, practical and transferable skills appropriate to a qualification in restorative dental practice and its practical application.
Admissions Policy
Applications will be accepted from graduates with a minimum 2:2 Bachelor of Dental Surgery or equivalent and a registerable dental qualification.
Applicants from non-English speaking-countries must provide proof of their proficiency in the English Language (Pass at IELTS overall band score of 7.0 or above).
Applicants are expected to have completed or be about to complete any current training or education course and be available to study for the full duration of the course of study in Cardiff. Applicants with relevant work or professional experience following graduation are encouraged to apply. The longitudinal “Stepwise programme” of clinical and theoretical training at Cardiff has been accredited as Prior Experience and Learning for the purpose of the MSc programme and candidates who have previously undertaken this programme successfully will be exempt from Module 3.
Selection to the programme is through written application, financial guarantee and two references (one of which must be academic). On acceptance of a place a 30% deposit will be required.
Selection will be carried out by the Course Director and module leaders all of whom have received training in Recruitment and Selection Procedures and Equal Opportunities. In the event of an oversubscription to the course selection will be subject to taking up academic references and an interview (exploring the career aspirations and motivation of the students). The Cardiff University Equal Opportunities Policy is enforced for all admissions procedures.
