MSc in Conscious Sedation (MSc/Diploma)

Students treating a patient

The part-time modular Conscious Sedation programme provides students with the opportunity to be awarded a Diploma or MSc degree via a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience.

The main objective of the degree course is to promote knowledge and understanding of conscious sedation in dentistry at both a theoretical and practical level.  Students will be encouraged to critically evaluate the theory and methodology of a variety of pain and anxiety control subject areas, aiding the development of evidence based practice and facilitating career development.

Programme-specific modules will include: Standard Conscious Sedation, Advanced Conscious Sedation, Research Methodologies, Alternative Sedation Techniques and Specialised Clinical Practice, and for those registered for the MSc in Conscious Sedation, the Dissertation Module.

At the end of the programme, the student will understand current issues and concepts relevant to Conscious Sedation in Dentistry and will be better equipped to use their knowledge within both the practise based environment and the wider NHS and research world.

Programme Structure

The Diploma programme is part-time over 2 years (one day a week). Three modules will commence with a three day taught component and then lead onto attendance for one day a week at the School of Dentistry.  Students can exit at the end of 2 years with a Diploma or study for a further year on the Dissertation Module to attain an MSc.

Learning & Teaching Methods

Most of the modules will be taught through the use of lectures, seminars, clinical practice and project-based learning.  Student centred learning will be encouraged through group work and collaborative learning.  Students undertaking the MSc will be expected to undertake a substantial amount of independent study during the 3rd year of the programme.

Students’ knowledge, skills, safety and clinical competence in the workplace will be assessed both formatively and summatively. Summative assessment for modules will include 3,000 word essays, Multiple Short Answer/Multiple Choice Questions, a Case-Based Project presented as a PowerPoint presentation, and workbooks.  A Learning Portfolio and Logbook will be maintained throughout the programme to allow feedback and discussion with teaching staff of case management.

Entry Requirements

The course is open to registered dental practitioners from the UK and EU who must have an interest in practising conscious sedation techniques.  Applicants must hold a primary dental qualification that is recognised by the (UK) General Dental Council; hold full registration with the (UK) General Dental Council before commencement of their studies; have a minimum of two years experience post qualification; and meet Cardiff & Vale University Health Board requirements to hold an Honorary Clinical Contract [Occupational Health clearance including Exposure Prone Procedures (EPP) and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) clearance (Enhanced)].

Potential candidates are normally asked to participate in a telephone interview as part of the application process.
