Erasmus information for Dental Students from other Institutions

This page is designed to help you discover the sort of thing that you may be doing as an Erasmus student in Cardiff.
It also gives links to the main Cardiff University web site, which, in turn, gives you further information about the City of Cardiff and the country of Wales.
The School of Dentistry is the only dental school in Wales, and one of 13 dental schools in the UK. The current intake is 80 students per annum, recruited from all over the world. We also have students training to be Dental Nurses, Dental Hygienists and Dental Therapists, and you may also meet Dental Technicians who are training at the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. You will find all the students here are very friendly and generally work hard and enjoy themselves.
The School of Dentistry is delighted to welcome Erasmus students. We are proud of our links with dental schools all over Europe, but are especially pleased to take an active role in shaping the future of European Dentistry via active participation in Erasmus and DentEd.
The School of Dentistry, University Dental Hospital and Dental Programme

The School of Dentistry and University Dental Hospital is a separate 5 storey building on the Heath Park site which includes the University Hospital. There are approximately 30 full-time academic members of staff and a similar number of hospital staff. The building has seen extensive programmes of refurbishment to enhance the clinical and academic facilities.
The course is delivered by a mix of lectures, seminars, laboratory instruction, chair-side supervision, Problem-Based and Self-Directed Learning.
We have a Dental Library housed within the Dental School building, which holds an extensive range of textbooks, journals and pamphlets, as well as teaching video tapes and CAL packages. There is a computer room with 36 terminals that give access to e mail and the web. The Library opens at 0900 and closes at 1730 or 18:00. It will stay open later during exam time. You will have an account set up to enable you to photocopy relevant material, but you should be aware of the copyright regulations that are posted in the photocopying area. This card may also be used for laser printing in the computer room. You can top-up the card by either credit card, debit card or cash.
The Hospital has 8 clinics with over 200 chairs, where students see and/or treat patients. These are:
Conservation (a 4 handed Close Support Unit), Dental Radiology, Examination and Emergency, Oral Health (an Adult Polyclinic), Oral Medicine, Oral Surgery, Orthodontics and Paediatric Dentistry, Periodontology, and Prosthetics. Under certain circumstances it may be possible to undertake some outreach clinical experience.
The Dental Programme
The dental programme in Cardiff is a 5-year odontological programme, awarding a fully classified honours Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS Hons) degree.
The key features of the curriculum are; vertical and horizontal integration (involving Dental Nurses, Hygienists and Therapists), early clinical contact, increased formative assessment, increase in time for self-directed learning, an increase in outreach clinical experience and the maintenance of a reflective portfolio.
ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)
The Dental School in Cardiff does not yet use ECTS, however we do subscribe to the philosophy behind ECTS. This means that we will guarantee the recognition of your study here in Cardiff, and you will work alongside our students with the opportunity for full participation in academic life. We are unable to provide you with Credits, but would expect to be able to award you the equivalent of 20 credits for a successful and satisfactory 3-month stay.
