part-time MBA: Core Courses
Students on the Full-time MBA programme undertake 3 core programmes:
Organization and Personnel
The first of the Core Programmes in the Cardiff MBA - Organization and Personnel focuses on the human and organizational problems of management and is divided into three courses Core Courses The three courses in this area are:
- Organizational Behaviour
- Industrial Relations
- Personnel Management
Participants are provided with a rigorous introduction to the main theoretical ideas in the area, together with an appreciation of relevant techniques, based upon an application of behavioural science to management problems. This approach involves diagnoses of key issues in complex situations, enabling general ideas to be applied to particular circumstances.
Strategy & the environment
The second of the Core Programmes is Strategy and the Environment which is also divided into three courses and teaches an awareness of the constraints under which managers work. The three courses in this area are:
- Managerial Economics
- Marketing
- Strategic Management
These courses give participants an appreciation of the environmental constraints and opportunities within which managers must operate. The courses introduce participants to the policy options available to business organizations and to the main ideas relating to the management of the market interface. All managers need a substantial knowledge of these areas in order to understand their own role and its contribution to the overall enterprise, even when they have no immediate responsibility for policy or marketing.
Information & Control
The third and final choice of Core Programmes provides participants with an understanding of the scope and nature of the information required for the managerial processes of decision-making and control The three courses in this area are:
- Financial Management
- Business Statistics
- Operations Management
These courses give participants a knowledge of the methods and ideas relevant to the provision of information for managerial decision-making and to the control of management systems. The emphasis is on materials, machines and money. In some areas many of the more sophisticated techniques are largely employed by specialists, but the courses are based on the belief that managers must understand the foundations from which such techniques are derived.
