Cardiff Business School academic appointed Chair of Fair Trade Wales
5 June 2026
Cardiff Business School academic Dr Maryam Lotfi has been appointed as Chair of the Board of Directors at Fair Trade Wales, the national organisation that supports and promotes Fair Trade across Wales, the world’s first Fair Trade Nation.
Dr Lotfi is a Senior Lecturer in Sustainable Supply Chain Management and Co-director of the Modern Slavery & Social Sustainability Research Group at Cardiff Business School. Her research focuses on ethical and socially sustainable supply chains, modern slavery prevention, workers’ rights, and responsible business practices.
In her new role, Dr Lotfi will help guide the strategic direction and governance of Fair Trade Wales. She will also play a key role in strengthening partnerships, influencing policy discussions, and championing fair and sustainable trade practices both nationally and internationally.
The position includes supporting Fair Trade Wales’ work with communities, public institutions, businesses, and the Welsh Government to maintain and enhance Wales’ commitment as a Fair Trade Nation.
Speaking about her appointment, Dr Lotfi said:
I am honoured to take on this role at such an important time for Fair Trade Wales and its future development. Fair trade is fundamentally about dignity, justice, and creating supply chains that value people alongside profit. I look forward to working collaboratively with Fair Trade Wales, Hub Cymru Africa, communities, policymakers, businesses, and international partners to strengthen ethical and sustainable trade practices, amplify producer voices, and support positive social impact across Wales and beyond.
Her appointment comes at a pivotal moment as Fair Trade Wales continues its mission to promote equitable trade systems and support producers and workers worldwide, while reaffirming Wales’ global leadership in fair and ethical trade.
