Dr Stephen Pettit graduated with a BSc Honours degree in Maritime Geography from Cardiff University in 1989 and in 1993 he was awarded a PhD from the University of Wales.
In the last decade he has been involved in a range of transport related research projects. Notably, he was involved in a groundbreaking project for the Department of Transport, studying the UK economy’s requirements for people with seafaring experience. This work was updated in 2003 and highlighted important issues relating to the decline in the number of UK seafaring officers.
He has been involved in a wide range of international transport related projects for EU DGVII (DGTREN). These have included:
- The economic value of shipping to the UK economy;
- The implementation of the Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping Convention within Far East Maritime Colleges;
- A survey of Higher Education Courses in the UK and Europe in the field of Maritime Economics and Logistics;
- An Analysis of the cost structure of the main TEN ports (ATENCO);
- Work Organisation in Ports (WORKPORT); and
- Maritime education and training project (METNET) as part of the NEPTUNE consortium.
His most recent research work has considered aspects of the logistics
of humanitarian aid delivery. An initial project was funded by
the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport through their Seedcorn
Grant scheme and was co-researched with Dr Anthony Beresford. This
work is now being extended through collaboration with Cranfield University
in the Cardiff-Cranfield Humanitarian Logistics Initiative.
