July 2009 - the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Asian Elephant Conservation Fund www.fws.gov/ allocated $52,000 to Danau Girang Field Centre and Dr Benoît Goossens for their project on the Kinabatangan elephant social behaviour. The grant will support Nurzhafarina Othman’s PhD during which she will be trained in population biology, behaviour, GIS and conservation genetics. The project will also benefit from a strong collaboration with the NGO Hutan based in Sukau, Kinabatangan and its Elephant Conservation Unit. Dr Marc Ancrenaz, scientific director of Hutan, who will co-supervise Farina’s PhD with Benoît Goossens. Danau Girang Field Centre would like to thank the US government for their continued support in their work to better understand the biology of the Bornean elephant and to conserve this magnificent animal.
