From 20 August to 3 September, 13 students and two staff from the University of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover, Germany took part in a 2-week field course on “Behavioural ecology and conservation biology of tropical vertebrates – Model region: Malaysia”. Under the leadership of Professors Elke Zimmermann and Ute Radespiel, the students were introduced to capture-recapture techniques, morphometric characterization and taxonomic identification of small mammals; standard census techniques and GIS-based mapping of primate populations along the Kinabatangan river and radiotracking of tree shrews, focal behavioural observations and GIS-based spatial analysis.

During the field course, five students focused on radio-telemetry of tree shrews, captured seven individuals and set up radio-collars on five (4 males and 1 female), followed their movements in the forest in order to map their home range. Two other students studied the vocalizations of proboscis monkeys, while two others carried out a census of primate groups along the river, between Takala and Khoya tributaries.
