Our work focuses on the widely conserved HtrA family of serine proteases with a particular focus on bacterial and mammalian family members. These conformation-specific factors are involved in all aspects of ATP-independent protein quality control including the detection of misfolded proteins, the regulation of unfolded protein response pathways and the regeneration of the functional state of the cell. The work aims at revealing general concepts governing the underlying molecular mechanisms of protein diagnosis, repair and degradation.
