Lecturer, Year 1 Chair (term 2) & Erasmus Coordinator
Welsh School of Architecture
Bute Building, King Edward VII Avenue
My main research areas are: Eco-fabrication & Experimental Compact Dwellings (Cero-Architecture); Sustainable Urbanism (Eco-polis); Urban Renewal; Transformation and Re-activation of Suburban Tissues; Theory of Architecture and 3D Fog Catching in Coastal Arid Lands.
Academic & Professional Profile:
I hold a Ph.D. in Architecture and Master in Urban Design (Barcelona School of Architecture). I have an international professional and advanced research experience in environmental, urban and housing design mainly in Europe and overseas (Latin America). I have a solid foundation of design excellence; conceptualization; innovative and cross-disciplinary vision; and leadership in effective international teamwork. I have obtained several design awards in international design entry competitions. Before I joined the Welsh School of Architecture (WSA), I was senior architect and project leader at the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in Rotterdam (www.oma.eu)
Since mid-2007 I work as lecturer and researcher in Architecture at WSA. In terms of teaching, I contribute to the co-ordination and lecturing of the undergraduate and graduate teaching programme of WSA in the following fields: Architecture Design; Technology, Urban Design and Theory and History of Architecture. I also supervise postgraduate research students at MPhil, MSc and Ph.D. levels in the fields of sustainable urban design, low-passive energy design and theory of architecture. My strength is to deliver a holistic pedagogic model at all levels, which I consider experimental, exploratory and non-reductive regarding the traditional curricula. In terms of learning, I do believe that the new forms of education should pass design criteria from approaching and testing the sensorial and spatial limits of knowledge. Therefore design studio becomes a 'lab of biodiversity', a think-tank hub which conceives new environs.
My current research covers the following areas: Eco-fabrication & Experimental Compact Dwellings (Cero-Architecture); Sustainable Urbanism (Eco-polis); Urban Renewal; Transformation and Re-activation of Suburban Tissues; Theory of Architecture and 3D Fog Catching in Coastal Arid Lands.
l lead a new design platform called ECO FABRICA (www.ecofab.org) and also RECICLARQ, an NGO established since 2005 in Barcelona (www.reciclarq.org), which works in the areas of appropriate technologies (eco-fabrication), material reuse, urban repair and climatic design.
