Research interests
My research interests are in the professional and legal aspects of architecture and building procurement, both in the UK and internationally. As well as being a qualified and practicing architect, I also have a post-graduate law degree, and specialise in design liability and construction contract law. I have publishedextensively in this area, including a series of books on JCT standard forms of building contract (all re-published in 2011 as third editions), and the fourth edition of Which Contract? I contribute regularly to the International Construction Law Review and have contributed chapters to The Architect’s Legal Handbook. My current project is a fifth edition of Cornes and Lupton’s Design Liability in Construction, to be published in 2012 by Wiley-Blackwell.
External activities
I have extensive links with the construction industry and the architectural profession. I am a partner in Lupton Stellakis (www.luptonstellakis.com). I am also a Chartered Arbitrator, and an adjudicator and expert witness.
I am chair of the Construction Industry Council Liability Panel, and member of the RIBA President’s Advisory Committee on Dispute Resolution (a Presidential appointment). I have twice been elected to the Architects Registration Board (ARB), serving from 2006-2012. During this time I represented ARB on the Architects Council of Europe (ACE).
