CRiBE Urban Sustainability
Over the past 15 years CRiBE has developed world leading urban environmental planning tools to consider energy use, traffic flow, pollution management and the relationships between the built environment and public health. In 2003 it was short listed for an Environment and Innovation award for its modelling of existing building stock.
The Energy and Environmental Prediction (EEP) Model
CRiBE's Energy and Environmental Prediction (EEP) model is a computer based Geographical Information System (GIS) modelling framework that quantifies energy use and other environmental factors for cities.
The EEP model has been designed to be transferable to other cities worldwide. The model is directly transferable to UK cities. It was initially developed in Cardiff (Wales) and is currently being applied to Camden (England), Leicester (England), Belfast (Northern Ireland), Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council (Wales) and Newcastle (Australia). Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council is the first local authority area where the EEP model is being applied fully, this has led to further work to promote energy efficiency to owner occupiers. The EEP model is currently being expanded to consider the impact of the built environment on public health. This work is jointly funded by the Medical Research Council and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in collaboration with the Welsh School of Medicine
Practical Evaluation Tools for Urban Sustainability
The PETUS project will develop a framework of practical tools for urban
sustainability and will enable public and private sector organisations to better
manage projects. The framework provides a consistent approach for
evalution across a range of infrastructure projects including sector specific projects: water/sewerage, waste, transport, energy and green areas and also projects of a holistic nature. PETUS is funded by the European Community and will last for 3 years. The project is being led by CRiBE in collaboratoin with seven European partners and other relevant organisations. There is close collaboration with endusers in Wales, including: CLAW, WDA, WAG, Wales Water and the Environment Agency.
Building Market Transformation (BMT)
In partnership with Oxford University, the BMT project will examine how to achieve a 50% reduction in CO2 emissions from the UK Building stock by 2030. BMT will examine policy, economic, social and technical issues. It covers residential and non-residential buildings, and existing buildings as well as new buildings. It will explore changes in building use, the building shell, equipment inside the building, as well as technologies that provide low or zero carbon heat, electricity and cooling.
Sustainable Urban Housing: strengthening capacity in policy formulation and implementation in the city of Xi'an
Sustainable Building Design and operation: Universities of Tianjin and Cardiff
An international network project between China Tianjin and Cardiff University that aims to develop a joint energy efficiency strategy to achieve a good indoor environment in China. A range of case studies are to be chosen for each year to cover different aspects of building design and operation. This year, the project will focus on the environmental performance of high-rise residential buildings using computer modelling.
Social Interactions with the Built Environment
CRiBE also has expertise in environmental psychology, focussing upon how people respond to environmental and technological risks, and studying (the interaction between) the psychological and social/environmental basis of people‚Äôs health, well-being and quality of life. A current project is looking at the health effects of social capital and cohesion, perceptions of neighbourhood quality, and neighbourhood deprivation. Other interests are in perceptions of indoor air quality (including radon and EMFs); the health effects of the quality/sustainability of housing; and lifestyle risk factors (such as smoking, drinking and physical inactivity).
