LGBTQ+ inclusion

We are committed to creating an environment where LGBTQ+ staff and students feel respected, valued, and able to thrive.

We recognise that diversity strengthens our community and that everyone should be able to study, work, and contribute as their authentic selves, free from discrimination, harassment, or exclusion.

Our approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion is embedded within the University's Strategic Equality Plan and wider commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging (Cynefin). We work in partnership with staff, students, trade unions, and representative networks to identify priorities, remove barriers, and foster an inclusive culture across all areas of University life.

The University is proud to participate in Cardiff's annual Pride parade. Since 2023, Cardiff University and Cardiff University Students' Union have jointly hosted a pre-parade celebration and breakfast event for staff, students, and their families, friends, and supporters. The event provides an opportunity for our community to come together, celebrate diversity, and demonstrate visible support for LGBTQ+ equality before marching in the city-wide parade.

Enfys

Established in 2006, Enfys provides a welcoming community for LGBTQ+ colleagues and allies, offering opportunities for networking, peer support, social connection, learning, and advocacy. The network organises events throughout the year, including LGBTQ+ History Month, Pride, awareness-raising activities, guest speakers, and community-building events.

Enfys also provides an important staff voice within the University, working with colleagues across the institution to help shape policy, inform initiatives, and support the University's ongoing work to create an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ staff and students.

Stonewall

As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we're a member of Stonewall's Proud Employers programme.

In 2024, we achieved a Silver award in Stonewall's Workplace Equality Index, ranking 109th out of 246 participating employers across the UK. External benchmarking helps us identify areas of good practice, understand where further development is needed, and strengthen our approach to LGBTQ+ inclusion over time.
