Disability and access
At Cardiff University, we are committed to continuously improving the accessibility of our services and to be an inclusive place of work and study.
The University has a Business Disability Forum membership. This membership allows all of our staff to access the resources available through the organisation. Business Disability Forum provides resources and training on disability inclusivity. It can give advice and support on removing barriers for disabled students and staff, and provide training and development opportunities to learn about best practice.
We have partnered with AccessAble, an online resource providing accessibility information about our campus buildings. The detailed guides were created by trained surveyors, and they include information on parking spaces, toilets, stepped/ramp access, and changing facilities. The will be checked on an annual basis, allowing us to track our progress in opening up our spaces for everyone. The surveys have also provided our team who looks after campus with a detailed plan for improving the accessibility of our current buildings.
Our Disability Staff Network is the University’s network for staff who identify themselves as disabled, have long-term physical or mental health impairments, or whose personal experience of disability issues means that they want to make a contribution to the disability agenda. They meet 4 times a year with the aim of providing a supportive and positive environment for discussion, often suggesting solutions to workplace issues, and with the aim of increasing the understanding of disability within the university.
We take part in Disability History Month and International Day of Persons with Disabilities each year, aiming to host a series of events which are accessible to our staff and students.
Our Cardiff University Supported Internships offer young adults with learning disabilities and/or autistic young people an opportunity to gain employability skills and show how much they can achieve. We are proud to have been the first employer in Wales to engage with the Supported Internship Programme. We offer a range of different placements across the University as part of the programme, working in collaboration with Cardiff and Vale College. Young adults are supported by a mentor, and one of our success stories is giving a full-time job to one of our interns.
