This 10-week, 20-hour module covers the principles and practices of dementia care, with a focus on the unique challenges and opportunities within Wales.

Learners will explore topics such as the types and stages of dementia, person-centred care, communication strategies, and support services available in Wales.

The course emphasises the importance of ethical practice, understanding the impact of dementia on individuals and families, and the application of research to improve care outcomes.

Through case studies, guest speakers, and interactive discussions, learners will develop critical thinking skills and gain insights into the field of dementia care.

Learning and teaching

On successful completion of the module, a student will be able to:

  1. Explain the types and stages of dementia.
  2. Understand and apply person-centred care principles.
  3. Develop effective communication strategies for interacting with individuals with dementia.
  4. Evaluate support services and resources available in Wales.
  5. Reflect on ethical issues and professional conduct in dementia care.
  6. Explore the impact of dementia on individuals and families.
  7. Understand and apply techniques for managing challenging behaviours.
  8. Assess the needs and preferences of individuals with dementia.
  9. Navigate the structure and function of dementia care services in Wales.
  10. Implement strategies to support caregivers and families.
