Cardiff Business School logistics expert awarded Companionship of Operational Research

A Research Professor of Decision Science and logistics expert at Cardiff University has been awarded Companionship of Operational Research by the Operational Research Society for sustained support and encouragement for the development of operational research.
Professor Aris Syntetos, founder and director of the joint University-Industry PARC Institute of Manufacturing, Logistics and Inventory with world-leading logistics company DSV, is recognised for his pioneering work in supply chain forecasting and inventory management.
His research has helped to bridge the two fields conceptually and practically, leading to the development of now-embedded methods in commercial software worldwide.
On receiving the award, Professor Syntetos reflected:
This is one of the most meaningful honours I have received in my career. I’ve been a member of the Operational Research Society since my early PhD years, and I never imagined when I was a boy that I’d ever achieve one of the highest honours of the Society.
“The award has recognised my extensive publication record, research funding success, mentorship of emerging researchers and commitment to professional service, which have significantly enhanced the visibility, credibility and impact of Operational Research in academia, industry and government.
“I would like to dedicate this to my PhD advisor and mentor, the late Professor John Boylan of Lancaster University, who encouraged me to pursue research that is theoretically rigorous and practically relevant. John's influence on my work has been immense and I’m forever grateful for his love and support.”
Professor Syntetos has worked closely with organisations, from major multinational corporations to small and medium-sized (SME) enterprises, supporting Cardiff Business School’s ongoing SME accreditation.
The impact of this work has been independently evidenced through Research Excellence Framework (REF) case studies demonstrating significant inventory cost reductions and profitability improvements.
His long-standing partnership with DSV has shaped the development of the business leaders of tomorrow through executive and graduate training programmes, including the Accelerate programme, held annually at Cardiff University.
He has also influenced public policy, working with the Welsh Government, leading to the establishment of RemakerSpace, a not-for-profit initiative dedicated to enabling the circular economy and ending planned obsolescence.
