Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS)
Last updated: 16/07/2025 09:21
The Immigration Health Surcharge, or IHS, is a fee required for anyone applying for immigration permission to enter the UK for more than 6 months or extending their visa within the UK.
Paying it grants access to the National Health Service (NHS).
What it covers
- Access to emergency care
- GP appointments and treatments
- hospital treatment
Prescriptions are free of charge in Wales. Some services, like dental treatment and eye tests, still require payment.
How much do you pay?
IHS is calculated based on the total duration of the visa granted (length of leave), including any additional 'wrap-up' period before/after your course (usually 2-4 months for degree level).
The cost is £776 per year and £388 per part-year up to 6 months. Any part year over 6 months incurs the full 12-month fee.
The full amount is paid online when submitting your visa application.
Refunds
There are limited circumstances where you may be eligible for a refund of the fee paid. You can find full details of when a refund applies on the UKVI IHS website.
