Paying your tuition fees is an important part of completing your enrolment. Learn about the process and explore the range of secure payment options to make it easy.
Step 1: Find the right payment information for you
Your payment process depends on your student status. Choose the section that applies to you.
Home (UK) student
Undergraduate students
If you're funded by Student Finance, your tuition fees will be paid directly to the university in instalments each term, once your attendance has been confirmed
Once you receive your Notification of Entitlement from Student Finance, check that your course details and tuition fee amount are correct. If anything is wrong, log into your Student Finance account and update your application before 1 September - it can take up to 20 working days for changes to be processed. After 1 September, you’ll need to contact the Funding and Advice Team for help.
Postgraduate students
Your loan is paid directly to you – choose your payment method
Self-funded students
You can pay in full or in three instalments – choose your payment method
International student
- please make sure your first instalment is paid before you arrive in Cardiff, or provide evidence of sponsorship for each year of your course
- a sponsor could be a government, embassy, employer, or scholarship provider. You must upload official documentation during enrolment
- tuition fees paid in advance can be deducted from the money you need to show for your student visa. When checking your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies), please ensure that the financial information is correct and accurately reflects the fees paid to date
- accommodation payments can only be included in your CAS if you have booked and paid for Cardiff University accommodation. We can only reflect a maximum of £1,483 paid towards accommodation on your CAS, even if more has been paid
- if you arrange private accommodation, any payments made cannot be included in your CAS
- you can also download a receipt from SIMS
- use our secure platform for international payments
Joining through Clearing
If you’ve applied through Clearing, we understand your funding may be delayed.
- you can still enrol with a pending Student Finance application
- if you’re waiting for a loan decision, contact the Funding and Advice Team for support
- if you're self-funded, you can pay in full or in three instalments – choose your payment method

Withdrawing from your course
You won’t be charged any tuition fees if you withdraw within 2 weeks of your course start date. After that, the amount you owe will depend on when you withdraw.
The way your fees are calculated depends on how you're funding your studies. Select your funding type to see what applies to you:
Funded by Student Finance
- term 1 (13 October 2025 to 18 January 2026) - 25% of your fees
- term 2 (19 January 2026 to 12 April 2026) - 50% of your fees
- term 3 (13 April 2026 to 12 June 2026) – 100% of your fees
Self-funded
You’ll be charged a pro-rata amount based on how many weeks you attended:
- 32 weeks for undergraduate courses
- 52 weeks for postgraduate courses
Refunds will be processed where applicable.
Some courses have different rules regarding fee refunds. If the refund rules for your course differ from the standard regulations, you will be clearly informed before the course begins.

If you provide false documents or act suspiciously when paying your tuition fees, the university may investigate this under its Anti-Money Laundering Policy. If you’ve made a genuine mistake or submitted incorrect information by accident, please contact us as soon as possible to let us know.
