Welsh medium provision

We offer the opportunity to study part of your mathematics degree through the medium of Welsh.

Cardiff University has the highest number of Welsh speaking students in Wales.

We have worked with Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol to develop our provision in a focused and strategic way for these students. Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol works with universities across Wales to develop Welsh language opportunities for students. Students studying mathematics at Cardiff University through the medium of Welsh are eligible to apply for the Coleg Cymraeg's Incentive Scholarships.

Modules and tutorials

We provide Welsh medium tutorial classes in all our first and second year core mathematics modules. If you're interested in being part of a Welsh medium tutorial class, or to find out more information, please contact Mathew Pugh.

We also offer two modules entirely through the medium of Welsh, a second year course in mathematical problem solving and a third year course on an introduction to teaching mathematics in secondary school. Students can also carry out a project in Welsh.

The Cyflwyniad i Addysgu Mathemateg mewn Ysgol Uwchradd (Introduction to Teaching Mathematics in Secondary School) module is designed to encourage students to consider a career in teaching mathematics through the medium of Welsh. Students will develop their understanding of mathematics education and the curriculum structure at an introductory level. Placements in local secondary schools are provided as part of this module.

Resources

Welsh medium mathematics resources are available for our core modules on the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol e-learning platform, Y Porth.  These include the following resources:

CCC11029: Deunyddiau Cefnogi Mathemateg

This resource contains notes which deal with the following topics: numbers; inequalities; functions; differentiation; integration; and analysing functions. These notes contain many examples and exercises.

MTH1001: Paratoi Problemau a Datrysiadau yn y Gwyddorau Ffisegol

This resource contains six resource packs dealing with basic core principles of mathematics and physics: differentiation; integration; vectors and matrices; exponential and logarithmic functions; trigonometry and complex numbers; and statistics. These packs contain exercises and solutions, with the objective of raising students’ confidence in dealing with mathematical topics and terminology in Welsh.
