We are currently based in the Cathays Park campus next to the Sherman Theatre and the Students' Union.
Our central location is just a few minutes walk away from libraries and other support services. The city centre can also be reached on foot within 10 minutes.
Abacws will be the new home of the Schools of Mathematics and Computer Science and Informatics.
In September 2021 we will be moving to our new purpose built £39m home, the Abacws building. It is located within the heart of the university next to the Students' Union and near to the new Centre for Student Life and the Innovation Campus. It is close to the centre of town and adjacent to the Cathays railway station with a range of student accommodation nearby.
Our new building will offer our staff and students the latest in up-to-date facilities including:
- computer labs designed to enable group work as well as classes and individual study
- Makerspace and IT workshop
- flexible lecture theatres and seminar rooms with innovative layouts to encourage interaction
- dedicated spaces for student project work.
This new facility will be shared with the School of Computer Science and Informatics which will facilitate our existing collaboration with Computer Science and will help to develop further research synergy particularly in combinatorics, optimisation, data analysis and machine learning. It will also enhance our existing strategic partnership with the Office for National Statistics and we will benefit from our proximity to the new Innovation Campus.
Our research groups will have the space and facilities, including seminar rooms and collaboration spaces, to develop new research areas and collaborative research projects.
The Cardiff University Data Innovation Research Institute, which is jointly led by the Schools of Mathematics and Computer Science and Informatics, will be closely embedded in the research environment and the co-location of our researchers will only assist in the further achievement of its aims.
The bespoke facilities in Abacws present further opportunities to enhance research engagement with industry, government and the community, and improve our research impact. It will also provide exciting new facilities for our taught students and support our aim to recruit high quality research students.
