Exploration Geology

Learn how to explore for Earth’s natural resources on this unique degree, the only undergraduate course in the UK to focus on specialist training in resource exploration.

On our Exploration Geology course, you will learn how the Earth’s processes have created the planet’s natural resources and how to explore for them to meet future demand. Exploration geologists will be central to delivering a low carbon future by helping meet the surging demand for metals, like copper and lithium, to supply the renewable energy industry that’s needed to tackle climate change.

As part of this course, you will have the opportunity to go on a unique 5-week summer placement where you will work as a junior geologist and experience what it is like to carry out exploration.

Programmes

The most enjoyable moments of my degree were the field trips to Pembrokeshire, Cornwall and Spain. The 5-week mapping project at the end of second year made my passion for exploration even more clear to me, and it is the reason why I decided to pursue a career in this field. Weekly practical lessons helped me apply the theory we learnt in lectures to real-life scenarios. Since graduating from Cardiff University in 2020, I began working as a Project Geologist for a small UK-based consultancy. I have worked on everything from early-stage exploration to operational gold mines across South America and Mexico.
