The student culture at Cardiff means there are communities for everyone to get involved with. I was able to explore multiple extra-curricular interests as well as making great friends and just having a fun time in general.

I decided to stay in Cardiff after my BSc in Environmental Geography and went on to do a MSc in Global Ecology and Conservation. The School of Earth and Environmental Science has academics from such a wide range of specialisms that means an education here will expose you to real-time scientific advances in all your current interests as well as introducing you to some you didn’t even know existed.

The Environmental Geography degree gave me the opportunity to become immersed in all elements of Earth and Environmental Science including field research, policy and law, physical science and sustainability. It gave me a good knowledge foundation which allows me to apply myself easily to the variety of projects my current job role has me involved with.

When coming to the end of my university journey, I felt confident that my degrees had set me up to easily follow any career path I could have desired. Even if I hadn’t wanted to continue into the environmental sector, the transferable skills such as problem solving, critical thinking and communicating to a variety of audiences, were all under my belt and apparent with good evidence from the range of coursework tasks I had undertaken.

If you have an interest in the environment, and are looking to get a degree in a field that will allow you to grow, develop, and come out as a highly employable individual, I couldn’t recommend the Environmental Geography course enough.

Graduate career

I am now working as a GIS consultant which involves completing spatial and data analysis and producing cartographic content for environmental, agricultural and renewable energy projects. My aptitude for GIS was allowed to develop during my BSc, but the course gave me so much more, contributing to my personal growth and development as an environmental and spatial scientist.

I have worked with groups like Natural Resources Wales, Welsh Government and Natural England as well as companies involved in wind and solar farm developments.
