My main research interests concern investigating the genetic risks for neurodevelopmental disorders, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I am currently being funded by the Wellcome Trust (2015-2019) to investigate a series of inter-related genetic hypotheses for the increased prevalence of neurodevelopmental disorders in boys compared to girls.
My Sir Henry Wellcome Postdoctoral Fellowship project is titled: "A genetic study examining sex differences in the prevalence of ADHD and other neurodevelopmental disorders". The project involves collaborations with Dr Ben Neale at the Broad Institute (Cambridge, USA), Prof Paul Lichtenstein at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Karolinska Institutet (Stockholm, Sweden), as well as Prof Anita Thapar at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff University. During this project, I will be analysing genetic data from the Psychiatric Genomics Consortium ADHD dataset and the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden.
I completed my PhD within the section of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics in 2014. The title of my thesis was “Examining the Clinical and Genetic Overlap of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Autism Spectrum Disorder Traits” and it can be downloaded freely.
Prior to my PhD, I obtained a BSc in Experimental Psychology from the University of Bristol and then worked as a Research Assistant at Cardiff University, collecting data and performing analyses as part of the Study of ADHD, Genes and Environment.
