Teaching profile

Research interests

Shan Shan has been working as a building energy consultant on a wide range of projects, including offices, hotels, shopping malls, galleries, train stations and airport terminals, laboratories and residential buildings since 2007. Specific examples include Parkview Green in Beijing (Integrated Design Associates), Brickell Citicentre in Miami (ARQUITECTONICA), IC hotel in Davos (Baulink AG and OIKIOS GmbH), Kunsthaus in Zurich (David Chipperfield Architects), to name but a few.

Based on her practical experience, Shan Shan’s research interest is to bring research into practice and work with the industry to streamline the low carbon design of new buildings or refurbishment of existing buildings with significantly reduced carbon emission and energy bills. Shan Shan is interested in developing carbon and cost-saving design solutions for the purpose of meeting the future building regulations and pioneering the outstanding building performance.

Her specific research topics include 1) Low carbon/ energy positive design, 2) Computer simulation for thermal comfort, 3) Building Regulations and Environmental Assessment Methods, and 4) Development of a model assisting in energy positive communities design.
